Some items and substances are completely prohibited on aircraft. Certain items may only be carried in checked luggage, while others may only be carried in carry-on luggage.

Important items, such as medications, should always be packed in your carry-on luggage. For more information about travelling with medicines, please see our article How should I pack medicines?

Food products may be carried through security screening and transported in both carry-on and checked luggage. However, please remember to check the liquid restrictions for carry-on luggage, as well as any restrictions imposed by your airline and the customs authorities of your destination country. For more information about carrying liquids, please see our article How much liquids can I bring in my hand luggage?

Power banks, spare batteries, and loose batteries must be carried in carry-on luggage. They are prohibited in checked luggage.

Dangerous goods, such as flammable, toxic, or corrosive substances, including lighter fluid and fireworks, are completely prohibited. These items can usually be identified by the warning symbol on the packaging or in the product information. Some everyday liquid products may also contain dangerous substances and are therefore not permitted on board an aircraft. Examples include highly flammable ski waxes and shoe polish.

Sharp objects are not permitted in carry-on luggage. An exception applies to small sharp items with a blade length of less than 6 cm, such as nail scissors.

You may bring one box of matches or one cigarette lighter into the cabin. It must be carried on your person, for example in your pocket. Matches and lighters must not be packed in either carry-on or checked luggage.
